          • Diegosec 65th Anniversary

          • Alumni Unveil Restored Monument as DMCS Marks 65 Years of Legacy and Pride

The Alumni Association of Diego Martin Central Secondary School marked the school’s 65th anniversary in a meaningful and lasting way with the unveiling of a rehabilitated monumental wall bearing the school’s monogram, a symbol of pride, identity and continuity that now stands renewed on the school compound.

The unveiling formed the centrepiece of the Blue Sapphire 65th Anniversary Thanksgiving Service, held on Friday 16 January 2026, and reflected the alumni’s commitment not just to remembering the past, but to visibly investing in the future of the institution that shaped them.

For the Alumni Association, the restored monument is more than a physical structure. It represents ownership, belonging and responsibility. A reminder to students and alumni alike that Diego Martin Central Secondary School is an honourable place, worth protecting. The monogram, now prominently displayed, reinforces a shared identity across generations and serves as a quiet but powerful statement: we were here, we remember, and we give back.

The thanksgiving service, officiated by Reverend Canon, Ashton Gomez of the Parish of St. Michael and All Angels Anglican Church, brought together a wide cross-section of the Diegosec family — past principals, former teachers, alumni, parents, students, staff and community partners. Among the dignitaries present were Hon. Hans des Vignes, MP for Diego Martin West, Principal Ag. Ms. Desner Corria-Paul, School Supervisor III Mrs. Simone Haynes-Noel, PTA President Rodney Bowen, and former school leaders including  Gayle Khan, and Joan Bosland.

In his address, Alumni President Roland Thomas reflected on the school’s beginnings in 1961 and its role in shaping generations of students beyond academics alone. He reminded students that while technology and times change, character, discipline and integrity remain central to success. He also announced the launch of the Alumni Association Award Programme, which will recognise the school’s top CSEC performer annually — a deliberate effort to motivate excellence and keep alumni actively engaged in student development.

Honourable Hans des Vignes, himself a past student, spoke candidly about how Diegosec shaped his sense of self and urged students not to be limited by labels or expectations. His presence served as a living reminder of what is possible.

Principal Ms. Corria-Paul described her role as one of stewardship rather than ownership, noting that she stands on the work of decades of principals, teachers and ancillary staff who carried the school through challenges and change. She highlighted the school’s continued achievements in academics, sports and the arts, and praised the alumni for their guidance and support.

Addressing the gathering, Mrs. Simone Haynes-Noel, School Supervisor III, described Diego Martin Central Secondary as an institution shaped by diversity, resilience, care and discipline. She reminded students that the school’s strength lies in its people and praised staff for upholding strong value systems that continue to positively influence both the community and wider society.

PTA President Rodney Bowen briefly addressed the gathering, commending the dedication of teachers and staff and reaffirming the PTA’s commitment to supporting a holistic, family-centred school environment where students can thrive.

Rev. Canon Gomez challenged students to value history, develop human intelligence alongside technology, and understand that education is about learning and not merely passing exams. His message underscored the importance of values, making the right choice and personal responsibility in shaping the future.

As Diego Martin Central Secondary School celebrates 65 years, the restored monument now stands as a visible testament to alumni pride and partnership — a marker of where the school has been, and a signpost pointing confidently toward where it is going.

          • Girls Space Programme

          • The Soroptimist Clubs of Port of Spain and Chaguanas have partnered with an entity Called *Space kids India* founded by one Dr. Srimathy Kesan. The latter has embarked on a mission called *ShakthiSAT* to involve 12,000 *girl students* from 108 countries, ages *14 to 18 years* (making it open to CSEC and CAPE students), by providing STEM education on a space exploration mission (which in turn covers many STEM areas). It will do this by giving them an opportunity to build and launch a satellite aimed at the lunar orbit. It is open to countries that do not have their own space programmes or the ability/funding to start one. https://www.shakthisat.org/. *The programme has been approved by our Ministry of Education* and a letter should have been sent out to schools earlier this year.

What we need from the schools is the girls. The Soroptimists will provide mentors and tutors to support the girls in the academics and on their journey and do the fund raising and chase the sponsorship for the local programmes. Via the online platform, girls enrolled will be provided girls with interactive online training in STEM via a 120-hour course that covers:◆ Physics, mathematics, and electronics (PCB designing).◆ Programming, coding, and satellite systems.◆ Introduction to payload design and spacecraft assembly.

The courses combine theoretical lessons with virtual practical tasks to maintain engagement and understanding. The curriculum runs until late October/early November 2025 at the end of which one girl from each country will be chosen to go to India for two (2) weeks in January 2026, on an all expenses paid trip (accompanied by the TT ShaktiSTAT ambassador) to participate in the building of the satellite module. The satellite developed by these students will be launched into lunar orbit in collaboration with  Indian Space Research Organisation as part of Chandrayaan 4.

This isn't about the competition or academic dominance (and we are setting criteria for being chosen as the country representative to reflect qualitative behaviours such as leadership, willingness to coach peers etc in addition to completion of modules), this is about gaining exposure and knowledge beyond what you normally get in the classroom and expanding the horizon of girls. This is an exercise where winning is defined as getting as many girls as possible in the age ranges, from as many schools as possible to participate and network with their peers. Failure is if only the usual suspects participate because others think it is out of their league or not meant for them. This is a chance to learn - including from international experts that the global forum will be using to hold lectures online.

Being fully online where the training courses consist of recorded sessions and modular content, gives the curriculum a flexible nature since students can pause and resume their learning as needed at their convenience. The adaptability is designed to minimize dropouts by accommodating individual challenges and needs.  By way of example, even though the programme was launched in April, due to exams students were obviously focused elsewhere, so we are planning a *relaunch on 20 July*. This does not mean that girls cannot join later.

If you and your peers can get this out to your girls and encourage them to join us, it would be most appreciated. For further information and to register contact dscmoses64@gmail.com
