Why Learn Math
Girls Space Programme
The Soroptimist Clubs of Port of Spain and Chaguanas have partnered with an entity Called *Space kids India* founded by one Dr. Srimathy Kesan. The latter has embarked on a mission called *ShakthiSAT* to involve 12,000 *girl students* from 108 countries, ages *14 to 18 years* (making it open to CSEC and CAPE students), by providing STEM education on a space exploration mission (which in turn covers many STEM areas). It will do this by giving them an opportunity to build and launch a satellite aimed at the lunar orbit. It is open to countries that do not have their own space programmes or the ability/funding to start one. https://www.shakthisat.org/. *The programme has been approved by our Ministry of Education* and a letter should have been sent out to schools earlier this year.
What we need from the schools is the girls. The Soroptimists will provide mentors and tutors to support the girls in the academics and on their journey and do the fund raising and chase the sponsorship for the local programmes. Via the online platform, girls enrolled will be provided girls with interactive online training in STEM via a 120-hour course that covers:β Physics, mathematics, and electronics (PCB designing).β Programming, coding, and satellite systems.β Introduction to payload design and spacecraft assembly.
The courses combine theoretical lessons with virtual practical tasks to maintain engagement and understanding. The curriculum runs until late October/early November 2025 at the end of which one girl from each country will be chosen to go to India for two (2) weeks in January 2026, on an all expenses paid trip (accompanied by the TT ShaktiSTAT ambassador) to participate in the building of the satellite module. The satellite developed by these students will be launched into lunar orbit in collaboration with Indian Space Research Organisation as part of Chandrayaan 4.
This isn't about the competition or academic dominance (and we are setting criteria for being chosen as the country representative to reflect qualitative behaviours such as leadership, willingness to coach peers etc in addition to completion of modules), this is about gaining exposure and knowledge beyond what you normally get in the classroom and expanding the horizon of girls. This is an exercise where winning is defined as getting as many girls as possible in the age ranges, from as many schools as possible to participate and network with their peers. Failure is if only the usual suspects participate because others think it is out of their league or not meant for them. This is a chance to learn - including from international experts that the global forum will be using to hold lectures online.
Being fully online where the training courses consist of recorded sessions and modular content, gives the curriculum a flexible nature since students can pause and resume their learning as needed at their convenience. The adaptability is designed to minimize dropouts by accommodating individual challenges and needs. By way of example, even though the programme was launched in April, due to exams students were obviously focused elsewhere, so we are planning a *relaunch on 20 July*. This does not mean that girls cannot join later.
If you and your peers can get this out to your girls and encourage them to join us, it would be most appreciated. For further information and to register contact dscmoses64@gmail.com
